A Brief History of Karate
Present day karate can be traced back about 1400 years but modern day karate was first introduced into Japan in 1922 by Funakoshi at the university in Tokyo where he was a professor, he was invited to give a demonstration. Many students became intrigued and wanted to train, this is how the karate association first started.

Funakoshi taught in many universities and in 1936 established the J.K.A (Japan Karate Association), Funakoshi became the chief instructor. Over many years many of Funakoshi's students have become teachers and masters in their own right and we see the development of many styles basiclly following Funakoshi's teaching.

Today at the Sussex Karate Association we still follow these teachings. With etiquette, self disipline and physical fitness being our main priorities.
