Sussex Karate is a small association teaching a style of Karate called Shotokan. This is a very traditional form of Karate with it's roots leading right back to Okinawa in Japan. It is a friendly club with a family atmosphere and traditional Japanese values. It is a member of the National Association of Karate and Martial Art School.
The clubs head sensei is Robert Birchlea 6th Dan. He has devoted much of his life to karate and has trained with such karate greats as John Van Weenen. He has also won countless karate competitions. The clubs senior sensei Ron is a 3rd dan and has been with S.K.A. for 12 years also Sam Coombes is a 1st dan and has been with the S.K.A. for 8 years.
Sussex Karate teaches the traditional principles of Japanese Karate including discipline and etiquette. Karate can not only give you confidence but a sense of achievement as you see your self improve over the weeks. It also encompasses the changing world including self defence techniques that have very practical implications. With violent street crime on the increase it can give you that little extra confidence when you are walking home at night.
